Meet DJ Melvyn

Hi, my name is Melvyn and I’m the oldest member of the YPN team. I got the bug for DJing / Presenting way back in 1974 whilst serving in the Royal Navy; I had a radio show on HMS Ark Royal and also DJed for private functions in the Officers Mess when we docked in the UK and in foreign countries too, so you could say I’m well-travelled.

After leaving the Navy in the 80s I settled in Devon with my family and have been DJing professionally since then.  The guys at Your Perfect Night invited me to join the team in 2005 to offer a wider range of DJ choice and to cater for the young-at-heart parties.  YPN gigs are always a great success and the rest – as they say – is history!

I will be the first to admit that I’m not a club or chart DJ (I’ll leave that to the younger members of the team) and mostly do family functions where a wide range of music is required.  There are plenty of charty tunes in my box, but you’ll probably choose me for my selections of classic cheese and rock from the 60s through to the 00s.

Tune of 2010: not my thing… sorry

Fav all time tune: Anything from the 70s but T-Rex - Metal Guru tops my chart.

Fav gig 2010:  Late summer at a Wedding Reception in Thorverton. The Bride and Groom had asked all their guests to choose their all-time fav music track, so you can imagine the wide range of genres and styles we had on the list. It was a real challenge to get all the music and play every track, but we love a challenge.  Then on the night someone asked for ‘Gary Byards - The Message.’ The only version I had lasted for 15 minutes so I decided just to play the first 3-4 minutes.  When the track started the (already packed) dance floor went like a magnet and I ended up playing the full 15 min track and even got a cheer at the end.

Talk about teaching old dogs new tricks.  Just got use to using a laptop and then get asked to start bloging and let everyone know what is happening in my world.  So where do I start lol.
